AwardsThe Society presents the following awards each year:
The Sir Wilfred Fish Research Prize The Sir Wilfred Fish Research Prize, instituted in 1970, is awarded annually by the British Society of Periodontology, with object of encouraging researchers in the early stages of their career. The Prize takes the form of a cash award of £500 together with a Certificate. Candidates must have been a University Faculty Member for less than 10 years (irrespective of working as a faculty member at different institutions), have been clinically qualified for less than 15 years on entry, and must present on their own behalf research work which should have an application to periodontology and must be unpublished. Joint authorship is not permitted. The Research Prize is open to members and non-members of the Society and to international competition. Registration fees for the meeting will be waived but other expenses will not be paid. Prize winners are prohibited from applying in subsequent years. The Prize will be awarded for a communication to be delivered at the Research Session of the Autumn Meeting of the Society. Each communication will be for 15 minutes. Data projection facilities will be available. The communications will be assessed by adjudicators appointed by the Council of the British Society of Periodontology and will be judged on research merit and on the quality of the presentation. The presentation must contain explicit details of exactly which components of the research the applicant has undertaken personally, and must explain the precise contributions to the research of any other individuals. The winner(s) will be invited to attend an appropriate Meeting of the Society to collect their certificate(s) and, for this, reasonable expenses will be met by the Society. The title of the paper to be presented should be notified by candidates to the Honorary Secretary (p.m.preshaw@ncl.ac.uk) by email no later than 1st July 2008. An abstract of approximately 200 words must be submitted electronically either with the notification of the title or, if this is not possible, by 1st September 2008. The British Society of Periodontology reserves the right to withhold the award of the Prize at the discretion of the adjudicators. BSP Clinical Fellowship Awards These have been developed to enhance clinical training, the aim being to facilitate applications for training places and reduce risk of dropouts for those UK/EU citizens training in These awards will replace the existing Marsh Midda and George Cross Fellowship Awards, but will still act to further the education of members of the BSP. The primary purpose is to enable the winner(s) to either: travel to "centres of excellence" recognised by the Council of the Society or carry out or complete specialist training within periodontology in the Clinical Fellowships would be available by competitive application for: 1. Junior hospital and clinical academic staff Criteria:
The award is open to members of the British Society of Periodontology who have been a University Faculty Member for less than 7 years, and who have been qualified for less than 10 years on 31st December of the entry year.
2. Postgraduate undergoing specialist training with UK/EU Citizenship Criteria:
UK/EU citizen, graduate of
Applications (max 4 pages) should contain full details of the proposed use of the funds together with a short CV (max 4 pages) of the applicant. Each application should be supported by a scanned letter of support from the Head of Department of the relevant Institution(s).
Current and previous clinical training, proposed future training plans for which support is sought, the location of future training, information on the intended programme of study and the period for which support is requested.
Applicants may be asked to attend for interview, and to provide references.
Awards will be competitive. Up to 4 awards will be offered, up to a maximum of £4000 each. Applications should be sent by email to the Honorary Secretary (p.m.preshaw@ncl.ac.uk) of the British Society of Periodontology by 1st December of the year of entry.
The winner(s) will be announced at the Society's Annual General Meeting.
The Society reserves the right to withhold awarding the Fellowship(s).
Those in receipt of the award must submit a report within 6 months of completion of the supported training event or research project and may be asked to present a brief communication to a meeting of the Society, also for publication within the Society newsletter. Appropriate expenses to attend the meeting will be met by the Society. The Society must be acknowledged in any publication arising from the funded work.
Successful Fellowship winners are prohibited from applying in subsequent years.
BSP Research Fellowship Awards
These are designed for postgraduate research development and training with a value up to £5000. The primary purpose is to enable the winner(s) to support research projects.
Criteria:
The award is open to members of the British Society of Periodontology who have been a University Faculty Member for less than 7 years, and who have been clinically qualified for less than 10 years on 31st December of the entry year.
Applications (max 6 pages including references) should contain full details of the proposed use of the funds together with a short CV (max 4 pages) of the applicant. Each application should be supported by the Head of School of the relevant Institution(s). Applications should be sent by email to the Honorary Secretary of the British Society of Periodontology by 31st March 2008 (p.m.preshaw@ncl.ac.uk). All documents must be submitted electronically together with scanned signed letters of support. The value of the award(s) will be at the discretion of the Society, up to a maximum of £5000. The winner(s) will be announced at the Society's Annual General Meeting.

Frank Ashley Undergraduate Prize A prize of £500 is offered by the British Society of Periodontology to encourage dental undergraduates to carry out projects related to periodontology, including electives. Applications are invited from students at United Kingdom Dental Schools and from graduates who have qualified within the previous twelve months. Joint entries are not acceptable for this award. Applicants are invited to submit proposed or completed projects (max 2 pages) by email to the Honorary Secretary (p.m.preshaw@ncl.ac.uk) by 31st July of the year of entry with completion of the proposed project expected within six months of submission. A maximum of one prize will be awarded at each submission date. The successful prize winner will be awarded £250 for the proposal and a further £250 on completion of the project sent to the Honorary Secretary. In the case of a proposed project £250 will be held back until completion of the project. The project should not include reference to the applicant or the Dental School. This should be supplied in a covering letter. However, this regulation will be interpreted liberally where the name or University of the applicant is an integral part of the project. Successful applicants are prohibited from applying in subsequent years. A certificate will be presented to the winner at one of the Society's meetings in the year of entry, or the following year. Appropriate expenses to attend the meeting will be met by the Society. The winners may be invited to give a short presentation at an appropriate meeting of the Society and, for this, travel, accommodation and reasonable expenses will be met by the Society.
The Society reserves the right to withhold awarding the prize. The British Society of Periodontology is committed to supporting audit
proposals with funding of a maximum of £500 for each project.
Proposals, which may be submitted at any time of year, will in the
first instance be considered by a panel of referees before making
recommendations to Council at its next meeting. Council normally meets
in March, July, September and December. The award is open to any member of the British Society of Periodontology. Applications should contain full details of the proposed use of the funds together with a one-page CV of the lead applicant. All members of the project team must be clearly acknowledged. A full protocol for the project must be submitted electronically,
together with details of where the project will be carried out,
duration of the project, how the project specifically benefits the
practice of periodontology, as well as details on how the data and
outcomes are to be disseminated. The proposal should also include details of:

Successful applicants will be expected to acknowledge the support of the Society in any subsequent publications or reports. Funding will only be provided on receipt of proof of any regulatory clearance, where appropriate.
