Claire is Adjunct Professor & Program Coordinator in the Ashman Department of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at NYU College of Dentistry in New York. She is the former Program Lead for BDS2 Undergraduate Periodontal Education at Kings College London and spent eight years developing a robust undergraduate BDS2 curriculum for periodontology, a rare position for a Dental Hygienist. She is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin in Dental Hygiene and also holds a Masters Degree in Teaching and Learning in Higher and Professional Education currently a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and the International Federation of Dental Educators and Associations. Claire has contributed to a chapter in the 'Textbook of Clinical Dentistry' alongside a team of faculty at Kings College London due for publication at the beginning of 2018.
Claire is the recipient of the Maurice & Vivienne Wohl Studentship Award where she won a prestigious scholarship to undertake a PhD in risk communication of dental diseases among dentists with the Behavioural and Social Sciences group, at the Department of Population & Oral Health also at Kings College London. Claire also consults on a practice based clinical trial where some behavioural interventions are being tested in a group of patients. This paper is currently under review with the Journal of Clinical Periodontology. She is external examiner for the Irish Dental Council Accreditation Committee and plays an active role in matters of curriculum design and implementation. She is currently collaborating on a large clinical trial to promote oral hygiene delivery among young dentists with a team at Bristol University.
Claire is an experienced public speaker and has delivered lectures and hands-on training nationally and internationally. She has presented at numerous scientific meeting and conferences in the UK, Ireland, Malta and Turkey. She has given lectures at the BDA, IFDH, BADT, BSDHT, KCL alumni and Turkish Society of Periodontology. Future events include ADI and IDHA. Her main interests are implant maintenance and she has de- signed and developed training for Dentists and DCP's. She recently set up a CPD company that focuses on the education of general dentists in the diagnosis and treatment of Periodontal disease. Claire is also consultant to dental companies providing expertise on products, equipment and educational programmes, utilising 22 years of clinical & academic experience within Dental Schools in the UK, Ireland and the US. Claire treats patients in a variety of primary care settings in London.
Claire is passionate about non-surgical periodontal instrumentation, patient education and disease prevention. She has a special interest in peri-implant disease management. She is a pioneer for oral health promotion and disease prevention and was awarded a stamp of excellence in recognition for her hard work and dedication to oral hygiene for 2016. Claire has had advanced training and education in periodontal instrumentation in the US and teaches advanced root surface debridement techniques, ergonomics and increasing patient adherence to oral hygiene. She writes for publications on a regular basis highlighting the importance of periodontal and implant assessment as routine and providing guidance on how to implement evidence into practice.
