A note from our President...
As you can see below, the Society continues to work to promote and support periodontology and periodontal and oral health. Recently the Health Care Select Committee published online all the submissions related to it’s enquiry into UK Dentistry and it was interesting to look at the range of bodies that chose to respond. You can see the BSP submission here: http://data.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/committeeevidence.svc/evidencedocument/health-and-social-care-committee/dentistry-services/written/105374.html
and all other submissions here: https://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/health-and-social-care-committee/inquiries/parliament-2017/dentistry-services-inquiry-17-19/publications
I’d like to thank members who took time to reply as individuals or as part of another response. This is an example of where we can attempt to use an opportunity to make our voices heard in the wider societal context.
I recently attended (on behalf of BSP) a Health Education England Workshop on Advancing Dental Care, the ongoing project to attempt to address manpower and training/career/CPD issues within the profession, aligned with perceived population needs for the future. We had a productive day at what is likely to be a number of events leading to the release of further information on this project later this year and early in 2020. This is an important project that will impact on current and future practitioners and we are working with the HEE team to achieve the best result for all.
This meeting was the day after our annual Society strategy meeting, where we review progress this year, assess and refine our ongoing initiatives and plans and work up developments for the future. We had an extremely productive day and have made a solid base for the future for BSP over the next few years, as well as addressing issues such as future webinars and Gum Health Day events.
One issue that was raised again at the strategy meeting was practitioner involvement. We do have a number of very dedicated practitioners supporting the Society but are keen for there to be an ongoing input from practitioner members. Please therefore do feel free to continue to engage with the Society as this can be the best way for us to support you, to help serve your needs as well as those of your patients and to engage appropriately with the public, media and decision makers.
