Webinar - 2017 World Workshop Classification System – Background from the Management Group and Classification of Health and Gingival Diseases

25.09.2018, 7:30pm-8:00pm

The Webinar is free for everyone.

Registered delegates can watch the webinar, with CPD, until 31 December 2019.  After that time the webinar will be free to view, without CPD, for all.

UK DELEGATES

Registering instructions will be sent out on Monday 23 September, as you need to register on the GoToWebinar site (a quick and simple process).  After registering you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar on the evening.

Only the first 1000 participants to log in on the evening will be able to participate in the live event.

However, booked participants will be able to view the webinar after the event on the BSP website.  You will be notified when the recorded presentation is available for viewing.

NON-UK DELEGATES

Non-UK delegates must book to view the webinar.  The webinar will be available on the BSP website with CPD from Tuesday 2 October and then for a further 3 months.  Please ensure you tick the box for NON-UK DELEGATES when making your booking.

1.5 hours CPD is offered to all delegates (UK and Non-UK) who have booked and viewed the webinar.  Evaluation form and CPD certificates will be available after the event on the website.

Webinar - 2017 World Workshop Classification System – Background from the Management Group and Classification of Health and Gingival Diseases

Abstract

Gingival diseases represent a large and heterogeneous group of conditions, some of which are dental plaque biofilm related, whereas others represent non-plaque related manifestations of systemic conditions or distinct oral conditions. Healthy gingival tissues possess an inflammatory infiltrate as part of natural immune surveillance, however the point at which a physiological inflammatory response transitions to a pathological response is unknown and varies between individual people. Therefore, some mild gingival inflammation is consistent with clinical (rather than pristine) gingival health. When individual sites of gingivitis become sufficient for a patient to be classified as a “gingivitis case” rather than a case of “clinical health” is important to determine, both from a population surveillance perspective and to facilitate a precision medical approach to individual patient care. Moreover, how gingival inflammation on a reduced periodontium is classified remains controversial, but important to define in order to identify the point at which a successfully treated periodontitis patient transitions from a case of health or gingivitis on a reduced but stable periodontium to a case of recurrent periodontitis. This presentation will share the evidence base and deliberations underpinning the new World Workshop Classification of periodontal conditions, in relation to health, gingivitis on an intact periodontium and gingivitis on a reduced periodontium. In addition, it will provide a simplified classification for non-plaque-induced gingival diseases and conditions.

Outcomes

  • Understand the rationale and need for a new classification system - GDC Development Outcomes A, C & D
  • Be aware of how gingival health is defined on a full and reduced periodontium - GDC Development Outcomes A & C
  • Understand the classification of plaque-induced gingivitis on a healthy and reduced periodontium and the predisposing and modifying factors - GDC Development Outcomes A & C
  • Appreciate the scope and classification of non-plaque induced gingival diseases - GDC Development Outcomes A & C
  • Gain an insight into the controversies surrounding and solutions for staging and grading - GDC Development Outcomes A & C
