GDC Development Outcomes C & D
GDC Development Outcomes C & D
Having qualified in 2002 and going immediately into a therapist and specialist periodontal practice positions, presented with many opportunities. I have always had the mind-set of learning something new every year and in 2006 was the year I would push myself out of my comfort zone and go into teaching (whilst maintaining clinical practice). Taking on this role allowed me to bring forward experiences into the training programmes of our future professionals. Through the development of my teaching role and having strong/inclusive relationships within my practices, I moved on to become Deputy Lead and am now Programme Lead for a London undergraduate programme.
My peripheral experiences have taught me, every physical aspect of dentistry is reliant on muscle building and memory (much like any sport). My colleagues and I train ‘instrumentation’ in this manner and believe it is a ‘sport’ that requires maintenance.
Away from dentistry, I am mother of two, a runner and in 2016 I joined a rowing club (having had no experience before) which has changed my approach to teaching and teamwork.
In 2008, I was extremely proud to qualify with a Diploma in Dental Hygiene and Therapy with distinction from King’s College London. At a time where my profession’s skill set was under utilised, I was able to experience my full remit within various settings of general and specialist practice. I returned to King’s College Hospital in 2011 as an educator for the undergraduate hygiene and therapy programme during which time I gained my Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice. Having grasped opportunities, experience and strong mentorship, I became the Module Lead for the Periodontal Instrumentation Programme. Working with like minded colleagues, we truly believe in building the skills in periodontal instrumentation incrementally and that it is a true form of ‘elite’ sport and needs to be trained and maintained as such.
I have developed and delivered training in periodontal instrumentation skills for the whole dental team for in-house practice training and wider organisations.
In 2013 I was elected Chair of British Society of Dental Hygienists and Therapists, London Group for two consecutive years which presented me with an opportunity to support our profession through a time of massive change.
In my non-world dental world, I practice the art of juggling work and motherhood to two very active young boys.
