INFLUENCING IN HEATHCARE
VITAL HEATHCARE CONVERSATIONS
Professional relationships can be built by great conversations, equally they can be destroyed through the inappropriate delivery or avoidance of vital conversations. Some research suggests that as few as 1 in 10 people have the ability to engage in difficult and uncomfortable conversations. It is important not to confuse ability with courage, some people have the strength and courage to initiate these conversations, yet lack the skills and insights required to ensure that relationships remain intact and the subject matter addressed and resolved successfully.
It is clear that handling crucial and difficult conversations is one of the defining qualities required of a contemporary healthcare leader.
Negotiating and influencing in Healthcare isn’t about winning or getting one over on someone, its far more important than that and far more complex. You will negotiate all the time with colleagues, suppliers, providers, patients, their families, employees and many more people.
You may consider yourself to have a good approach to influencing or that you are too soft or too tough, the fact is that in such a complex working environment no one style fits all. Current demands on healthcare create a new dimension and although for some it is exciting, for others it presents nothing but more and more threats. The context you are influencing in as a leader cannot be separated from the choice of approach you take. Only the most flexible of Leaders can step up and take this on successfully as it often requires new and varied skills as well as the right ‘mind set’.
