TEAMS- Working together for success

I am honoured to have been elected President of BSP for 2023 and to be able to work with colleagues to deliver an Annual Conference that aims at engaging all members of the oral healthcare community. The Conference, entitled 'Teams - working together for success', is based on my strong belief that we need to work closely together with a common goal in order to deliver the best treatment outcomes for our patients.

The Conference starts on Wednesday morning with a new collaboration between BSP and BSODR to help support early career researchers in developing their careers and in delivering future research to benefit our patients. The afternoon will allow early career researchers to compete for the prestigious Sir Wilfred Fish Research Prize, with the winner having the opportunity to present in the main Conference. There will also be fantastic lectures to enjoy.

The Conference on Thursday and Friday will develop the teamwork theme, from our patients views and opinions, contemporary patient management, working with other dental specialties, through to the future of periodontal care. I do hope you will come and join us and look forward to welcoming you to Birmingham 11th - 13th October 2023.

Prof Mike Milward, BSP President 2023

Joint meeting with Periodontal Research Group BSODR

This year, the Conference starts on Wednesday morning with a new collaboration between BSP and the British Society for Oral and Dental Research (BSODR).

The BSODR actively engage and support early career researchers (ECR). The term ECRs relates to any early career academic, whether clinical or non-clinical, who has an interest in the full range of oral and dental research and can range from undergraduates to PhD students, and everything in between.

Professor Milward’s aim in organising this joint meeting is to help support ECRs in developing their careers and in delivering future research to benefit our patients. The Conference theme, Teams - working together for success,” encompasses the important work done by researchers, as they tackle some of the healthcare challenges we face and help us to achieve better health outcomes for patients across the UK and around the world.

Main Conference Keynote Speaker - Perry McCarthy, Ex Formula 1 driver and "The Stig" from BBC Top Gear

Being a huge Formula 1 fan, Professor Milward is delighted that Perry McCarthy, Ex Formula 1 driver and "The Stig" from BBC Top Gear, agreed to deliver the keynote speech at his Conference this year. His talk will explore the importance of developing a team and working together.

Perry McCarthy is truly exceptional – he is an ex-Formula One driver, a bestselling author and is world famous as the original secret racing driver from BBC’s Top Gear - 'The Stig'.

To add to all this, Perry is very funny.

Formula One is one of the world’s most popular sports but with only 20 drivers globally, selected by 10 teams each year, it is ultra-competitive and one of the toughest to join. The odds of racing across the many international levels to reach this level without financial backing is quoted as a million to one, but that’s exactly what Perry McCarthy did.

In the world of International Motor Racing, McCarthy is known for his speed and humour, but he is also famous for his incredible determination, opportunism and deal making abilities. Perry’s motto is ‘Whatever it takes’.

His never say die attitude and incredible story is inspirational.

Damon Hill, 1996 F1 World Champion, said of McCarthy ‘I have constant admiration for how he turns a no hope situation into some sort of triumph.'

As a corporate speaker, Perry has given over 1500 appearances to organisations world-wide. His talks are fast paced and engaging as he entertains audiences with the fascinating story of his own journey and attitudes, while also providing a revealing insight to the ultra-competitive culture central to Formula One.

Biography

Mr Perry McCarthy

Damon Hill, 1996 F1 World Champion, said of McCarthy ‘I have constant admiration for how he turns a no hope situation into some sort of triumph.

As a corporate speaker, Perry has given over 1500 appearances to organisations world-wide. His talks are fast paced and engaging as he entertains audiences with the fascinating story of his own journey and attitudes, while also providing a revealing insight to the ultra-competitive culture central to Formula One.
