Aims

To explore where we want to go with non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy, not only from the professional perspective, but also from the perspective of the underlying biology and in the context of individual patient.

Objectives

In this lecture, it will presented how dental and periodontal professionals can assess whether non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy has been successful and whether the obtained residual pockets are the most optimal outcome. For this, we can use on the one hand a classic algorithm that remains valid in both old and new studies. On the other hand, we need to understand the biology and ecology of both the deepened, inflamed pockets, and the residual and shallow pockets. Further, the goal of periodontal therapy is not only pocket reduction but also coaching the patient on lifestyle changes to achieve optimal immune fitness to ensure stability of obtained therapeutic results. Periodontal health is important not only at the individual level but also socially and economically.

Outcomes

  • Shallow residual pockets (≤4 mm) without bleeding upon probing offer the best prospects for long-term periodontal stability.

  • Understanding that dental professionals can also participate in a holistic health approach for the periodontitis patient.
