Registering instructions will be sent out on Monday 29 April 2024, as you need to register with Zoom (a quick and simple process).  After registering you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar on the evening.

Only the first 500 participants to log in on the evening will be able to participate in the live event.  

However, booked participants will be able to view the webinar after the event on the BSP website.  You will be notified when the recorded presentation is available for viewing.

1.5 hours CPD is offered to all delegates who have booked and viewed the webinar. Bookings must have been made through the BSP website. Non-members will need their booking reference number to obtain CPD. Evaluation form and CPD certificates will be available after the event on the website.

Abstract

This webinar will look at some of the common dento-legal issues that arise when caring for a patient with periodontal disease. It will explain the importance of good communication to ensure that appropriate consent is obtained and discuss the role of good record keeping to help ensure patients receive appropriate care. Tips on how to handle complaints if they arise will also be discussed. This webinar is for all clinicians, including DCPs who provide care under prescription of a dentist as well as under direct access.

Aims

  • To provide an overview of some of the dento-legal difficulties encountered when caring for people who have periodontal disease.

  • To discuss methods for trying to avoid these difficulties, so helping to avoid litigation.

Objectives

  • To understand the importance of communicating effectively with patients.

  • To understand the need for a detailed history.

  • To appreciate the importance of keeping accurate records.

Biography

Dr Leo Briggs

I qualified from University College Hospital, London, in 1989. I have worked extensively in the Community Dental Service including a brief period overseas. I have also worked in General Dental Practice.

I gained an MSc in Periodontology from the Eastman in 1995 and I am on the GDC specialist register for Periodontics. Since 1995 I have provided specialist periodontal treatment in both the Salaried Dental Services and Private Practice.

I started working part time for the DDU in 2005.

From 2007 to 2009 I worked part time as a Clinical Tutor at the School for Professionals Complementary to Dentistry in Portsmouth.

From February 2009 I started working full time for the DDU. I became Deputy Head of the DDU in 2016.

Biography

Dr Navidah Chaudhary

Navidah graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2004 and obtained an MClinDent in Periodontology as well as accreditation by the EFP at the Eastman Dental Hospital in 2011. She has worked as a GDP and Specialist Periodontist in the NHS and Private sectors and is currently a Consultant and the Clinical Lead for Periodontology at Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospital.

Navidah is an examiner for the LDS examination and the Mono-specialty Membership Examinations in Restorative Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. She is also a Fitness to Practice panellist for the GDC.
