FGDP(UK) Fellow appointed to advise NICE

Dr Nick Palmer of the Faculty of General Dental Practice UK (FGDP(UK)) has been appointed dental adviser to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)’s Committee on Managing Common Infections.

NICE is currently developing a ‘suite’ of guidelines on infection management and antibiotic prescribing, and Dr Palmer’s role will include both prioritisation of topics and advising on guideline content.

A Fellow and former Board member of the Faculty, Dr Palmer is Editor of its highly respected guidance, Antimicrobial Prescribing for General Dental Practitioners, which has been consulted by dentists over 80,000 times. He is also a lead author of the Antimicrobial Prescribing Self-Audit Tool, which forms a key part of Public Health England (PHE)’s Dental Antimicrobial Stewardship Toolkit, published last year.

A highly experienced general dental practitioner, he is Clinical Adviser in Dental Education and Research Fellow at Health Education North West, sits on the oversight group for PHE’s English Surveillance Programme for Antimicrobial Utilisation and Resistance (ESPAUR) programme, and represents FGDP(UK) on its dental sub-group.

Dr Palmer is also currently encouraging dentists to join this year’s Thunderclap to take an antimicrobial prescribing pledge.
