New Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions

Following the recent, very successful, EuroPerio9 conference in Amsterdam, and the announcement made there concerning the New Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions, we shared with our members a press release from the EFP. This provided the background to the work undertaken to reach this stage and links to the full information now available online via the Journal of Clinical Periodontology (EFP) and Journal of Periodontology (AAP).

The BSP are considering the guidance carefully and will be publishing a BSP consensus document relating to practical implementation.

We currently have a working group of specialists who are going to devise a plan to implement this guidance with regards to the UK regulations and systems, and how to map the BPE across to the new system. The BSP will be leading on the UK guidance for practitioners and our advice will be communicated to you very shortly.

In addition, we have also planned a series of webinars on the new classification systems that will be hosted on the BSP website, starting in October 2018. The dates and booking arrangements for the webinars will be released shortly.

Future Webinars
Workshop 1 - Defining Periodontal Health - Professor Iain Chapple

Workshop 2 – Categorisation of periodontitis according to four stages and three grades – Professor Ian Needleman

Workshop 3 – Periodontal manifestations of systemic diseases and developmental and acquired conditions – Professor Francis Hughes

Workshop 4 - Classification of peri-implant diseases and conditions – Professor Nikos Donos

For the time being it is recommended that clinicians continue to use the existing classification systems.

We will also provide regular updates on social media:
