Aims

Personalisation of periodontal diagnosis via implementation of biomarkers was defined as priority in periodontology at the World Workshop of Classification of Periodontal and peri-implant conditions held by European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and American Academy of Periodontology (EFP). The most recent European Workshop of Periodontology was devoted to Contemporary and Emerging Technologies in Periodontal Diagnosis (EFP), stressing the need for implementation of biomarker-supported periodontal diagnosis. This lecture will discuss salivary markers-supported diagnosis in periodontology, the principles, how they are expected to improve periodontal diagnosis and related periodontal health care, what is the state-of-the art regarding research aspects and their respective clinical applicability.

Objectives

  • Understanding the concept of salivary markers in periodontal diagnosis

  • Current state of research and clinical applicability of salivary markers

  • Future promise regarding salivary markers-supported clinical diagnosis in periodontology

Biography

Professor Mia Rakic

Mia Rakic is a specialist in periodontology and oral medicine and a recognised expert in the field of personalised treatment of periodontal and peri-implant diseases, including biomarker-based diagnostics and targeted regenerative therapies. She received her PhD from the University of Belgrade, Serbia (topic: bone markers of peri-implantitis) and did her post-doctoral training in the Lab for Regenerative Medicine and Skeleton, Inserm U1229, University of Nantes, France (topic: development of precision biomaterials for peri-implant bone regeneration).

Her current research is focused on personalising clinical strategies for the treatment of peri-implant diseases through the implementation of biomarkers, targeted therapies, and machine learning algorithms, along with improving evaluation standards in preclinical and clinical studies in periodontology and oral implantology. She is an internationally recognised speaker in the field of periodontal biomarkers and was an expert in the biomarker working group at the recent European Workshop on Periodontology on Contemporary and Emerging Technologies in Periodontal Diagnostics (EFP). She is professor and Head of the Robert K. Schenk Laboratory for Oral Histology, Department of Periodontology, School of Dental Medicine, University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland, and President-elect of the EFP.
