Gums rock! Keep smiling!
On the 12th May, we will be joining with National Perio Societies from around the world to celebrate Gum Health Day.
This annual event, spearheaded by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), aims to raise public awareness of the negative impact of gum disease and the serious health problems associated with it.
Maintaining healthy gums and good oral hygiene can improve our self-esteem and overall wellbeing. In addition, gum health is a key factor for overall health throughout our life. Gum disease is associated with major systemic and/or chronic health issues including diabetes, myocardial infarction, heart failure, stroke, chronic kidney disease, adverse pregnancy outcomes, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and more.
This year’s campaign slogan is “Gums rock! Keep smiling!” and our aim is to empower people with the information needed to protect their gums, promoting a healthier and happier society!

What is gum disease?
Gum disease is also known as periodontal disease. If you learn about gum disease, you can prevent it. You can find more information about gum disease by reading the answers to our frequently asked questions.
You may also find it helpful to watch the informative "Ask the Expert" videos we created with members of our Patient Forum. The patients had the opportunity to chat to our dental experts, discuss queries they had about gum disease and discover how best to look after their gum health.

Public events to promote Gum Health Day 2025
We will be working hard to raise awareness of Gum Health Day on the lead up to 12th May and will be encouraging our members and dental practices to promote this important campaign in their waiting rooms to their patients.
BSP is also supporting our Undergraduate Representatives who will be setting up stands in busy locations and handing out our "Periodontal Health for a Better Life" leaflet to members of the public.
