BSP Dentine Hypersensitivity Clinical Practice Guideline
In September 2025, Professor Nicola West led a BSP initiative to create a global S3 Level Dentine Hypersensitivity Practice Guideline. The aim was to provide oral-healthcare professionals all over the world with precise therapeutic pathways based on individual patient diagnoses and make recommendations on specific interventions to get the best possible treatment results for patients with dentine hypersensitivity.
An expert team finalised Systematic Review and PICO(T)s on the following topics:
- Group 1: Aetiology Tooth wear DH (Led by Prof Anderson Hara, Indiana USA)
- Group 2: Aetiology Recession (Led by Prof Anton Sculean, Bern, Switzerland)
- Group 3: Trial Design (Stimuli DH) (Led by Dr Alex Pollard, Bristol, UK)
- Group 4: Lived Experience (Led by Prof Koula Asimakopoulou, Oxford Brookes, UK)
- Group 5: QoL and pain (Led by Prof Barry Gibson Sheffield, UK)
- Group 6: Home Treatment of DH (Led by Dr Alex Gormley , Bristol, UK)
- Group 7: Professional Treatment (Led by Dr Joshua Twigg, Leeds UK)
Consensus meetings were held at Kew Gardens to discuss the outcomes. The meeting consisted of a diverse and inclusive range of Oral Healthcare professionals (Dental Nurses, Hygienists, Therapists, General Practitioners, Academics, private and NHS Specialists), external medical, behavioural & science colleagues, (e.g. pain experts, QoL experts) stakeholder representatives and Patient Forum members. The BSP was delighted to engage the services of Professor Ina Kopp to moderate the whole process, as she has extensive experience in leading, strengthening and supporting international collaborations in guideline development.
We expect the paper to be published in January 2026 in Perio 2000, with open access. Once the paper has been published, Haleon has kindly agreed to support BSP and strengthen the reach of our dissemination to ensure the clinician’s ability to use and apply the evidence and increase patient motivation.

Scientific Programme
The Conference theme was Interdisciplinarity – and focused on how we could work together more effectively across periodontology, dentistry and medicine, to achieve the very best outcomes for our patients.
An exciting group of internationally renowned speakers shared their expertise, including dentists, medics, scientists, clinicians, dental hygienists and dental therapists. There was also a parallel session focusing on career development possibilities for DCPs, to explore career routes in addition to clinical practice.
BSP Awards & Prizes
There was a very high standard of entries for each category of award this year. The following prizes were judged and awarded at this year's BSP Conference in Newcastle:
- The Sir Wilfred Fish Research Prize - Crystal Marruganti:"Periodontitis increases the susceptibility to severe plaque psoriasis. A University-based cross-sectional study and microRNA expression analysis."
- BSP Systematic Review Prize - Faisal Alotaibi:"Premature Bone Resorption in Vertical Ridge Augmentation: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis."
- BSP Clincal Poster Prize - Sandeep Pai:"Socket Preservation for the non-implant based restorative solution- Think about the Pink."
- BSP Research Poster Prize - Kitty Guo:"Genomic analysis of the periodontal pathogen Fusobacterium nucleatum: Variation in virulence and implications for colorectal cancer risk."
BSP Family
The Conference was a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new friends. It was a pleasure to welcome members and non-members to our event where everyone is united by their passion for perio! We had some guests who travelled from as far as Ghana, India and Australia!
There is always a wonderful atmosphere at BSP Conference and our friendly members ensured that any newcomers felt part of the BSP family by the end.

BSP was extremely grateful to Acteon and Philips who kindly agreed to sponsor this year's BSP Conference and support us in delivering a fantastic educational event for our delegates.
A Trade Exhibition took place on 10 & 11 October 2024, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, providing an excellent opportunity for Conference delegates to speak to company representatives and explore their latest products and equipment.
Early Career Group Social Event
The Early Career Group Committee organised a social event on the evening of Wednesday 9th October 2024, at Pitcher and Piano, Newcastle. Nestled in the heart of the city quayside, this uniquely crafted bar provided a sophisticated place to relax and unwind whilst enjoying great food.
The evening was a great success and a wonderful opportunity for members to meet, network and discover how friendly everyone is at BSP
BSP Conference Dinner
The Conference Dinner was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on the evening of Thursday 9th October 2024. Guests enjoyed a private drinks, followed by a fantastic 3-course dinner.
The Conference theme was "Black, White & Bling, chosen by Prof Philip Preshaw as there are not many colours more important than black and white in Newcastle. And since we were in the home of Geordie Shore, guests embellished their outfits with their very best bling!
After dinner, we danced the night away to music performed by sensational Singer/Songwriter, Sam Dickinson, and his live band. A fantastic night was had by all!
