Dr Emily Lu: "The Impact of Vitamin D on Periodontal Health: Biological basis and Clinical Relevance."
Vitamin D exerts its biological effects through potent antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and host-modulatory actions and preclinical and clinical research indicate that vitamin D plays a role in the development of periodontitis. Early clinical research examining the relationship between vitamin D status and periodontal health consistently found an inverse relationship between serum 25(OH)D₃ levels and periodontal inflammation. Longitudinal and prospective studies exploring this association are scarce. Some evidence suggests that vitamin D may influence the progression of periodontal disease and tooth loss. Current evidence suggests that maintaining sufficient vitamin D levels contributes to better periodontal health. This session will outline the biological basis by which vitamin D might influence periodontal health and provide an update regarding the impact of vitamin D status on periodontal clinical outcomes.
