New Economist Enterprise Report Highlights the Impact of Oral Health on Athletic Performance
The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) has announced the publication of a new Economist Enterprise report, Winning Margins: The Impact of Oral Health on Athlete Performance, commissioned by the EFP and supported by EFP Partner, Curasept.
The report explores the growing body of evidence demonstrating the relationship between oral health and athletic performance. It highlights how oral diseases, particularly periodontal diseases, may affect inflammation, recovery, endurance, performance and overall health, emphasising that oral health is an essential component of an athlete's wellbeing.
As well as examining the scientific evidence, the report calls for greater integration of oral health into sports medicine and public health strategies. It reinforces the message that oral health cannot be separated from general health and should be recognised as a key factor in supporting both elite and recreational athletes.
The EFP sees this publication as much more than a scientific report. With major sporting events capturing global attention in the months ahead, it presents a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of the important links between oral health, overall health and athletic performance among healthcare professionals, athletes, policymakers and the wider public.
