Research Corner - Sharp nanothorn-equipped ionogel microrobots for targeted periodontitis therapy

Dr Kitty Guo has kindly written this month’s précis of a thought-provoking article recently published.
A new study describes magnetically controlled microrobots designed with the aim to treat periodontitis. It involves magnetically controlled microrobots equipped with sharp gold nanothorns used to penetrate and remove biofilm at difficult to access sites and may also provide a platform for localised antimicrobial delivery. This, of course, is a very early, pre clinical stage and there is no expectation to be loading patients’ periodontal pockets with robots any time soon, however, this is a fascinating insight into the path to discovery of future systems that could reduce biofilm burden and precisely deliver antimicrobial agents in the periodontal pocket.
The authors also deserve credit for the clarity and quality of the accompanying figures, which communicate the study effectively without the visual hallmarks of careless or lazy use of generative AI.
