Specialist Level Hands-On Course - Muco-Gingival Surgery: Procedures for Root Coverage - 9th February 2007

BRITISH SOCIETY OF PERIODONTOLOGY SPECIALIST LEVEL HANDS-ON COURSE Friday February 9th 2007, 9.30am - 4.30pm MANDEC, Manchester Muco-Gingival Surgery: Procedures for Root Coverage. Course Leaders: Mr Chris Butterworth & Mr Paul Baker Date: Friday February 9th 2007 Venue: The Manchester Dental Education Centre (MANDEC) Manchester Dental School, Cambridge Street, Manchester, M15 6FH Course Fee: £250 BSP members £325 Non-members of BSP This one-day course is aimed at specialist level Periodontists and would not be suitable for those without previous training & experience. It was first presented in December 2005 and was so successful, and oversubscribed, that it is being repeated in response to demand. The course will consider the causes of gingival recession and review the rationale and techniques involved in periodontal plastic surgical procedures for root coverage. The theoretical aspects of the course will be combined with hands-on practical teaching on pigs' jaws. In order to ensure useful guidance for those already possessing specialised skills, the course will be restricted to sixteen participants and there will be a high ratio of teachers to participants. In view of the restricted number of participants, completed applications from members of BSP will be treated on a "first come, first served" basis and applications from non-members of BSP will only be considered if there are unfilled places one month before the course. However, it will be expected that course participants will be familiar with the theories underlying muco-gingival surgery. All those who wish to apply should therefore return their application forms as soon as possible. As a charitable organisation the BSP does not intend to make a profit from the course and the realistic costing of the course reflects the high ratio of teachers to participants. We hope that you will enjoy this course and your feedback will be valuable for planning further Specialist level hands-on courses in the future. Yours faithfully, Philip R. Greene Course Director Course objectives • To review the causes of gingival recession. • To review or revise the theory of muco-gingival surgical procedures for root coverage. • To undertake a range of muco-gingival procedures on pigs jaws. The course will present an overview of the causes of gingival recession and it's relevance to patients and their dentist or specialist. The theoretical teaching will outline the types of procedures that can be used, explaining the benefits and limitations of each. This, combined with an explanation of the healing potential of the procedures used, should equip the clinician with the skills to decide what procedure is indicated for various clinical situations. During the hands-on section, participants will work on pigs' jaws. They will be shown a procedure before attempting it for themselves. Participants will have opportunities to practice the dissection of free gingival graft, the harvesting of connective tissue, the coronally positioned flap, the laterally positioned flap and the double papilla flap. This course would be aimed at BSP members with good experience in routine periodontal flap surgery and specialist periodontists who would like a refresher and the chance to practice the techniques on pigs-jaws. It would not be suitable for those without post-graduate training and experience in periodontal surgical technique. The following topics will be addressed: 1) Aetiology and epidemiology of recession 2) Evolution of procedures 3) Procedures and surgical techniques 4) Healing 5) Materials and Surgical instruments 6) Success rates There will be opportunities for the following hands-on practical teaching: 1) Free Gingival Graft 2) Harvesting connective tissue 3) Coronally positioned flap 4) Lateral positioned flap 5) Double papilla flap This programme qualifies for verifiable CPD and certificates will be issued on completion.
