Abstract

Biofilm formation on tooth/implant surfaces presents a significant challenge in maintaining optimal oral health, often contributing to gingivitis, and periodontal/peri-implant diseases. Effective disruption of biofilms is critical for preventing these conditions, especially in patients with compromised oral hygiene or at higher risk of disease. This presentation explores the use of water irrigators and air polishers in biofilm disruption, comparing their mechanisms of action, clinical applications, and clinical outcomes. A comprehensive review of recent studies and clinical guidelines will highlight the advantages and limitations of these devices providing dental professionals with evidence-based insights to optimize biofilm remove and enhance patient care outcomes.

Aims

To provide the audience with a broader understanding of the role of oral irrigators and air polishers for biofilm disruption around teeth and implants.

Outcomes

  • Identify key characteristics of oral irrigators and air polishing devices for biofilm management

  • Discuss why, when and how oral irrigators and air polishing might be applied to optimize biofilm disruption

  • Understand the evidence and clinical guidelines for the use of oral irrigators and air polishing devices
